Stand in cover and title for book 2 of The Chronicles of Princess Selene

Hello!

So, I have been working on the second book in my debut trilogy, The Chronicles of Princess Selene.

This week, I finished my major rewrite!

Woo! Celebration!

But now I start the... probably least fun part for me. Or second least. It's down there.

Now I start the editing.

So, why don't I particularly like this part of the writing process?

Because this is the part when you really have to lock in those little details.

Is there a character that was mentioned once and then disappears?

Are the characters consistent in their personalities?

Why doesn't the MC use this power throughout the book?

What the heck is this riddle and how do they solve it? (Honestly, I shouldn't try to put riddles in my stories, I'm terrible at creating them. Nevermind that I have plans for an urban fantasy detective novel done the line...)

So how do I conquer this most meticulous of tasks?

Notes.

Lots and lots of notes.

As I've been going through this edit in particular, I will write down characters and places that need names, phrases I seem to use a lot, and other instances that got lost in the shuffle of the writing haze that need to be addressed.

For example, I have a fight at one point where a character drops her sword, a sword that had special mention earlier. Not too much later I mention her drawing said sword, but there was no mention of how she got it back.

That's a problem.

Another thing I did for this editing run is to write down specific things I want to make sure are handled the way I want them to. Such as balancing levity and drama, or the methods a manipulative character uses making sense without seeming pushy and confusing.

Some of these last things are great question points for beta readers.

Which is the next step in this process.

I'm eager to find out what they have to say...
