My Rating: 5/5 stars

I currently base my reviews loosely around the CAWPILE system developed by Book Roast on YouTube. I modify the categories depending on the format of the story I’m reviewing.

My star ratings are purely by my opinion and not measured by any particular metric.

SPOILER WARNING: This review will contain spoilers! Proceed with caution!

Summary

Six guests are anonymously invited to a strange mansion for dinner, but after their host is killed, they must cooperate with the staff to identify the murderer as the bodies pile up.

Characters

Despite comedic stereotypes,  each character had varied and interesting backstories. The actors were all very good. (I mean, c’mon, Tim Curry is in it!) Everyone was suspicious in their own ways.

Atmosphere

It followed the formula: dark and stormy night, big scary mansion (complete with secret passages), remote area, barking dogs. Ther is a sense of unease with the emptiness of the house, like something is off and they use it to great effect.

Writing Style

It’s a mystery comedy based on a board game. All things considered, the writing is actually very clever.

Plot

Agatha Christie-esque whodunnit that keeps you guessing. It even used visuals to help with the mystery (who isn’t there in each murder find? Did you notice?). I actually kinda like the 3 endings, too. The characters were connected in interesting ways not obvious in the beginning.

Intrigue

Again, a good mystery. With each death, you’re trying to figure out who could’ve done it and how. New info kept being presented and tension increased over time with each death and each interloper.

Logic

Imperative for a good mystery and they did a good job maintaining the consistency.

Enjoyment and Final Thoughts

I had a blast watching this, especially since this was my first time seeing it and I was with a group of friends.

Would I Recommend It?

Absolutely! If you have not seen this movie, you should watch it. If you have seen it, go watch it again. A good time for all.
